Sports Minister John Eren has Father’s Day heart attack, undergoes surgery at Geelong University Hospital
SPORTS Minister John Eren has suffered a heart attack and undergone surgery today.
In a statement released tonight Premier Daniel Andrews said Mr Eren was taken to Geelong University Hospital with discomfort and suffered a heart attack at the hospital this afternoon.
“John has undergone surgery to insert a stent and remains in a stable condition. He’s expected to make a full recovery,” Mr Andrews said.
“John’s family would like to thank the staff at University Hospital Geelong for their professionalism and care, and asks for privacy as he recovers.
“On behalf of the Government, I offer every support and our best wishes to John, his wife Geraldine and their children during this time.”
Mr Eren, a father-of-five, will take leave while he recovers and a replacement minister will act in his place.
Mr Eren was on his way to Melbourne to visit his father when he felt chest pains and returned to Geelong, heading straight to the hospital.
Colleague and good friend, Corio MP Richard Marles visited Mr Eren not long after the surgery.
“He’s in good spirits, smiling, and of course he’s had a big shock,” Mr Marles said.
“He was very smart to heed the warnings and go straight to emergency. That gave me some sense of comfort. Hospital is the best place to be if you have chest pains.
“Those in the hospital acted is a very professional manner and everyone who is close to John is very grateful for that.”
Coincidentally, Mr Eren had only just opened the hospital’s new helipad on September 2.
